Covered steel logistics hub Duisburg opened

The new trimodal steel logistics hub of Haeger & Schmidt Logistics (HSL) commenced operations on 1 February 2022. Located on the Stahlinsel in Duisburg, around 12 million euros were invested in the new building complex last year.

On the occasion of the official launch, DI Horst Felbermayr, Managing Owner of the Austrian Felbermayr Group, to which HSL belongs, said “With the opening of this state-of-the-art warehouse, we are further deepening our offering as a trimodal full-service logistics provider. This enormously expands our possibilities in the distribution of high-quality steel products. Together with our other multimodal port terminals in Krefeld as well as Linz and Vienna/Albern and the PSA Beakbulk joint venture in Antwerp, which has been in existence since last year, this location expansion is also a significant extension of our range of services.”

The heart of the trimodal multifunctional hub is the heatable 9,000 m² steel hall with a capacity of around 60,000 tonnes for high-quality steel products. “The response on the market has been very good. More than half of the storage space has already been booked,” revealed HSL CEO Heiko Brückner. Two half-train tracks with 210 metres of rails each lead into the hall for handling a block train. In addition, the new building will be connected to the adjacent hall with a covered quai via a coil ferry.

Commenting on the strategic orientation, Brückner explained “With the new building, HSL is setting the course for significant growth in the area of high-quality steel products at the Duisburg location. The investment makes it possible to go deeper into the logistics chain and offer steel logistics from a single source.” For both the stable export business and the import business, which is increasingly gaining momentum, the modern terminal as a hub brings numerous time and quality advantages.

HSL CFO Per Nyström, has already received positive feedback, “The combination of trimodality and extensive handling and storage capacities under one roof is in demand. We are closing a gap in the market and ‘indoor steel handling’ opens up a new customer base for us.”

With the installation of the overhead travelling crane with a lifting capacity of 40 t in mid-January 2022, the steel warehouse is now ready for the handling and dispatch of heavy goods. In addition to classic handling and storage, HSL’s activities also include seaworthy stowage of the containers and expert unloading of the coils and sheets from the boxes. HSL also takes care of the on-time management of the onward or forward carriage by barge, rail, truck and short sea. Over 1 millio tonnes of steel are handled annually on the Stahlinsel.
