UNIT45 launches groundbreaking electric reefer at Intermodal Europe

At Intermodal Europe 2025 in Barcelona this October (21–23), UNIT45 will present its newest electric reefer container — a state-of-the-art refrigerated solution specifically designed for intermodal transport by road, rail, and sea.

This latest generation reefer is equipped with the advanced Star Cool 1.1 cooling unit, able to operate with the ultra-low GWP refrigerant R1234YF. Combined with LBA insulation foam and waterborne paint, it sets a new benchmark for sustainability in the reefer market.

The new UNIT45 electric reefer has been developed to provide maximum efficiency and reliability for the next eight to ten years. By combining environmentally friendly materials with cutting-edge cooling technology, the unit offers operators a solution that is both future-proof and compliant with the most demanding environmental standards.

The use of R1234YF refrigerant ensures a minimal environmental footprint, while the design focuses on reducing both direct emissions and energy consumption. The application of LBA foam and waterborne paint further underlines UNIT45’s commitment to sustainable manufacturing processes.

The Star Cool 1.1 cooling unit has been engineered to address the environmental challenges facing the logistics industry. It operates with extremely low leakage rates and high energy efficiency, resulting in one of the lowest Total Equivalent Warming Impact (TEWI) scores in the industry.

TEWI combines the direct emissions from refrigerant leakage with the indirect emissions from energy consumption, offering a comprehensive measure of environmental impact.

“Reefers operate globally and require a refrigerant that is safe to use, efficient, climate-friendly, and readily available. We’ve engineered Star Cool 1.1 with the industry’s first triple-refrigerant capability — with a design that has been found by DNV to be fully compliant with the requirements from safety standards ISO 20854. This gives our customers the flexibility to choose the refrigerant that best fits their operation and local conditions for today and tomorrow.” Georg Fösel, Manager, Refrigeration Technology and Industry Affairs, Maersk Container Industry

Reliability, Efficiency, and Sustainability

In addition to its sustainability credentials, UNIT45 has designed this reefer for long-term reliability and efficiency, giving customers confidence that their investment will remain relevant for years to come.

Its design allows for the transport of up to 33 euro pallets, making it a highly efficient solution for large-volume shipments, while its robust construction ensures seamless deployment across intermodal networks, including road, rail, and sea.

This makes the reefer an ideal solution for shippers and logistics providers who require both efficiency and sustainability in their supply chains.

“The container reflects UNIT45’s commitment to flexibility, innovation, and sustainability. As an intermodal pioneer, UNIT45 strives to be first in delivering eco-friendly solutions and shaping a greener, more sustainable future for global transport.” Jan Koolen, Managing Director, UNIT45

UNIT45 confirms that reefers equipped with this new cooling unit are already available, allowing customers to benefit immediately from this innovative technology.

With its combination of eco-friendly design, operational efficiency, and long service life, the new electric reefer represents the most sustainable solution of its kind currently on the market.

UNIT45 is a leading provider of innovative container solutions for the global logistics industry. With a strong focus on sustainability, efficiency, and technological advancement, the company is committed to shaping the future of intermodal transport and providing equipment that meets both present and future challenges.

Visitors to Intermodal Europe in Barcelona this October are invited to the UNIT45 stand (C52) to experience the new electric reefer (stand K30) first-hand and learn more about its features and availability.
