From Cargotecture to Cybertecture

In recent years, the shipping container has increasingly become a viable building material in commercial, domestic, temporary and permanent architecture. Combining environmental sustainability with cutting-edge design, container architecture has the potential to address some of the biggest social and housing challenges of today.
The Future Outlook Forum at Intermodal Asia 2018, will identify future challenges and opportunities in the container industry and discuss their likely impact on the market. One topic of focus will be Cargotecture.
James Law JP, Architect, Chairman & CEO of James Law Cybertecture will deliver a presentation entitled ‘High-quality desirable container homes: more than just a short-term, low-cost option’. The session will explore how the industry can move towards a new modular architecture called Cybertecture, giving an insight into new design concepts and projects of modular architecture.
Jame Law Cybertecture designed the AlPod and AlPod Tower in 2016, presenting it to Hong Kong and revealing this revolutionary concept to the world. The AlPod – a 450 sq.ft aluminium pod house fitted with full interiors, was designed as a lightweight mobile architecture, with systems for stacking up into high rise building. The design was created behind the belief that ‘buildings can be more than we have conceived them so far, and go some way to tackling some of the challenges facing society such as sustainability, affordability and buildability.’
“This is an important topic to discuss because traditional buildings cannot solve our urbanisation problems and challenges.” states Law “The biggest task for 2018 will be bringing forth technology to open up new potentials in constructing new types of architecture.”
In alignment with the conference focus, the exhibition will host a number of global exhibitors working within the container housing arena, including; Changshu Yahgee Modular Building, China International Marine Containers (CIMC), Conical, Dong Fang International Container and Shanghai Yaotuo Container.
The Intermodal Asia 2018 conference will run from the 20-22 March 2018 in Shanghai at the SWEECC. The Future Outlook Forum will take place on Tuesday 20 March.
