Traders corner – Rob Fisher

Rob Fisher, IMHX Connect Event Director, IMHX

What does ‘logistics’ mean to you?

As the pandemic proved, logistics – and the dedicated people that work in the industry – underpins the UK’s national economic and societal infrastructure. We are that hidden industry which ensures that supermarket shelves are stocked, that medicines are available on-demand and are the driving force that supercharges e-commerce.

What made you want to work in the industry?

I had worked in the events and B2B publishing sector for many years. When the chance came to head up IMHX, I couldn’t refuse.

If you could change anything in the industry, what would it be?

I think the lockdowns and the subsequent reliance on online deliveries have really shone a light on just how hard working and resilient our industry is.

What is the funniest thing that has happened to you recently?

Being asked for ID when buying a round at my local pub.

What three traits define you?

I think it would be better to ask friends and colleagues that question, but I’d hope they’d say my loyalty, good humour and boyish good looks.

What’s the most important trend you see today?

Automation, robotics and artificial intelligence technologies are having a huge impact on logistics and supply chain processes.

How do you define success?

For me business success is being able to connect buyers and sellers, regardless of if it is face-to-face or virtually. It’s about fostering early conversations and helping businesses, regardless of size, thrive.

What’s the most interesting thing about you, which we wouldn’t learn from your CV?

I had Christmas dinner with Elton John – well he was on the table next to me

If you weren’t working in your present role, what would you be doing?

I started my career in the banking sector, so I’d probably be involved with the finance industry in some way.

Where do you see yourself in five years?

Running successful hybrid events in a world where lockdowns, travel bans, and social distancing are a distant memory.

IMHX Connect – a new online event for the logistics community – takes place from 13 – 17 September 2021.
