Storage and distribution specialist Bretts Transport has completed the retrofit of four-way camera systems across its fleet.
Working in partnership with fleet safety technology provider Fleet Focus, Bretts has now equipped 24 vehicles with cloud-connected four-way camera systems. A further 18 vehicles are due to receive the same technology later this year.
The 18 new vehicles will also be equipped with AI-powered driver-facing cameras to provide an additional layer of risk mitigation and support safer driving practices.
The investment builds on Bretts’ existing relationship with Fleet Focus that began in 2023. The company initially supported Bretts in meeting the latest DVS Progressive Safe System requirements.
Each vehicle is fitted with a four-way system. This includes a forward-facing road camera, near-side and off-side blind spot cameras, and a cab-facing camera, providing comprehensive visibility around both the vehicle and in the cab.
However, for Bretts, the value of the investment into their new camera systems extends far beyond the hardware itself.
Cloud-based technology improves incident response
The company will also have access to Fleet Focus’ platform. It provides cloud-based access to footage from any location and any tablet or mobile device. The system allows for quick retrieval of downloadable real-time video evidence quickly following an incident.
The platform also carries out continuous health checks on the camera hardware. It uses AI to verify not only that each camera is operational, but that it is recording exactly what it is intended to capture.
Wayne Minney, Transport General Manager at Bretts Transport, said, “For us, this isn’t simply about fitting cameras to our vehicles to tick a box. It’s about investing in reliable technology that’s backed by a trustworthy and experienced partner. It ensures our drivers have the best level of protection available so they can carry out their jobs with total confidence, knowing they’re supported should an incident occur.
“The industry has seen an explosion in fleet technology over recent years. It’s easy to be drawn in by a good sales pitch. However, the technology itself is only one part of the equation. If a camera isn’t recording properly when a vehicle is involved in an incident, you’re potentially left without the evidence you need. That creates delays, increases costs and ultimately leaves both operators and drivers exposed.
“Having confidence that the system is working as it should gives us complete peace of mind. Equally important is having immediate access to accurate footage. It means we can establish exactly what happened, support insurers and resolve incidents much more quickly if an incident does occur.”
Wayne added, “Ultimately, this technology has become essential for businesses like ours and it’s no longer a nice-to-have.”
Long-term partnership supports safer fleets
Graham Plummer, Commercial Director at Fleet Focus, also said, “We’ve worked closely with Bretts for a number of years now. Throughout that time, it’s been clear that both companies share the same customer-first approach.
“We don’t believe in simply supplying hardware and walking away. Operators need a partner that’s responsive, provides ongoing support and helps them get the most out of their technology. We’ve been able to successfully deliver a phased rollout that gives the business confidence its drivers and vehicles are protected.”
