Electra commences build of its first hydrogen-electric HGV commercial vehicle range

Blackburn-based electric HGV manufacturer Electra Commercial Vehicles Ltd has placed its first order for a HyRange system from German/English manufacturer Proton Motor Fuel Cell GmbH for its prototype electric hydrogen commercial vehicle range.

The development comes as part of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed by the two companies in June 2021 to develop innovative, authentic zero-emission hydrogen-powered trucks.

Proton Motor`s HyRange system, in combination with hydrogen storage and battery system, is set to enable continuous daily operation of the prototype truck.

Delivering the green agenda

Sid Sadique, Chairman of Electra Commercial Vehicles, explained: “The technical challenge will lie in integrating the fuel cell, the fuel storage systems and software. It’s a balance between battery power and the fuel cell output to maintain the optimum efficiency of the whole drivetrain. The success of the hydrogen-powered battery-electric vehicle will open sales opportunities for more extended range requirements for operators. In addition, Electra can assist with a quicker transition from fossil fuels, ensuring the green agenda is delivered for companies.”

Meeting increasing demand for zero-emission HGVs

“We are delighted to have commenced our cooperation with Electra under the MoU signed in June. We look forward to supporting Electra as it develops its new range of fuel-cell battery-electric trucks. These vehicles will help meet the increasing demand for zero-emission HGVs in the UK,” said Dr Faiz Nahab, Chief Executive Officer of Proton Motor Fuel Cell.

The prototype will enter service in March 2022 and be trialled in the Tees Valley area with a major supermarket. Electra and Proton Motor will create at least five other hydrogen trucks under the initial phase of the MoU.
