OSRL has launched a new shallow‑water deployment capability, strengthening global source‑control preparedness for complex well‑control scenarios. They are showcasing the innovation at SpillAsia 2026. Delegates will be able to learn more about the integrated system through poster displays and speaker sessions during the event.
The capability integrates two key systems. First is OSRL’s Split Lowering System (SLS) which OSRL developed with InterMoor. Second is the new Snub Line Winch System, which Oceaneering developed. Together, these technologies enable capping stack deployment when surface conditions make conventional vertical access unsafe or impracticable. The SLS deploys, positions and lowers the stack from an offset location outside the hazardous surface plume. Meanwhile, the Snub Line Winch System provides controlled final alignment and landing on the BOP or wellhead.
Vania De Stefani, Chief Executive Officer at OSRL, said, “This shallow‑water deployment capability reflects OSRL’s continued investment in strengthening industry readiness for complex subsea incidents. By bringing together the Split Lowering System and Snub Line Winch System, it helps support safer, controlled capping stack deployment in challenging shallow‑water scenarios. It reinforces the value of collaborative preparedness across the industry.”
Key benefits
- Enables deployment where surface conditions prevent safe vertical access
- Provides improved control during the final landing sequence
- Supports deployment in water depths from 75 to 600 metres
- Enables rapid mobilisation from OSRL’s Norway base by sea or air
- Supports installation without a seabed interface of components
The launch enhances OSRL’s shallow‑water capping capability, supporting members in complex well‑control scenarios and reinforcing industry readiness for low‑frequency, high‑consequence subsea incidents.
