A special event is being held today to celebrate the distribution of the latest shipment of grain from Ukraine to Nigerian people as part of President Zelenskyy’s ‘Grain From Ukraine’ humanitarian initiative.
Last month a Ukrainian vessel carrying 25,000 tons of grain arrived in Port Harcourt, Nigeria, delivering vital supplies to Nigerian people who are dealing with conflict, insecurity and the climate crisis which is driving acute hunger in the country. Conflict has displaced 2.2 million people and left another 4.4 million food insecure.
The Ukrainian Embassy and the World Food Programme are hosting senior representatives of the Federal Government of Nigeria to mark the distribution of this much needed grain through the ‘Grain From Ukraine’ initiative and the strengthening relationship between the two countries.
Despite defending its homeland against the war on its people by Russia, a regime that continues to use hunger as a weapon, Ukraine is helping ensure stability and food security in the international community.
Andriy Yermak, Chief of Staff to President Zelenskyy commented; “Nigeria remains a committed friend to Ukraine, and we will do what we can to support our allies. Through shipments like this we are sending a message to our friends that, despite Russia’s aggression, we will do what we can to combat their attempts to foster food crisis, instability and the destabilising of nations for their own political gain. It’s important we acknowledge this with our Nigerian partners at today’s important event.”
Dr. Christopher Fomunyoh, a Goodwill Ambassador for President Zelenskyy’s Grain from Ukraine Initiative, welcomed another successful shipment to an African nation; “These shipments play a key role in preventing more Nigerians from falling into food insecurity. I want to thank Ukraine for their continued efforts and delivery of such vital resources to address this food security crisis.”
Ukraine’s Minister of Agrarian Policy and Food Security, Solskyi Mykola, said, “We are proud to support the international community and do our part to help those who are suffering in Nigeria. No nation and no individual deserves to suffer due to malnutrition because Russia has launched an illegal and aggressive war against one of the world’s largest food producers. Today’s event to mark this shipment and the role it has played in alleviating hunger is an important one.”
The ‘Grain from Ukraine’ initiative, launched by President Zelenskyy in 2022 in cooperation with the UN World Food Programme, delivers Ukrainian grain to countries across Africa, Asia and the Middle East at risk of famine.
Ukraine’s shipments via the Black Sea, despite threat of attack from the Russian Navy, demonstrate Ukraine’s determination to maintain its role as an international aid provider to other nations. Ukraine plans to continue expanding its global relief programme to other countries and with include other food products.
