Istanbul New Airport to become airport of the future

As Istanbul New Aiport continues its development it’s looking likely to set high standards in both size and technology. New information indicates it will offer a comprehensive set of IT solutions and smart technologies to meet the diverse requirements required of a modern airport.

For example, so-called beacon technology will be established for indoor navigation. Small gadgets, the size of a matchbox, will localize passengers inside the terminal and allow airlines to easily provide passengers with indoor directions, walking times to gates, lounge access, and boarding alerts. Visually impaired or handicapped persons will be able to use the indoor voice navigation. Another innovation: Passengers who possess biometric chipped passports can use automated e-passport gates, avoiding long lines and allowing them to get through passport control more quickly.

According to the latest newsletter published by İGA, the consortium that is building and will operate Istanbul New Airport for the next 25 years, around 3,000 monitors will keep passengers informed. They are part of a comprehensive passenger information system (PIS) which will inform and guide passengers interactively via touchscreen kiosks. Another innovation will be a baggage drop desk, enabling passengers to check in their luggage quickly and easily. To reduce delays, improve air traffic flows, and minimize exhaust fumes from airplanes, a state-of-the-art Airport Collaborative Decision Making (A-CDM) system will also be in use. A total of 1,700 kilometers of fiber cables and 4,500 kilometers of copper cables will be installed to secure the flow of information.

With a capacity of 90 million passengers a year, the Istanbul New Airport will be one of the largest airports in the world. The opening is planned for the first quarter of 2018.
