Multimodal 2022 smashes it out of the park

With over half this year’s attendees already rebooking their place, it’s safe to say that Multimodal 2022 was a resounding success 

Drawing once again the greatest innovators and collaborators in the trade world from around the globe, Multimodal 2022 arrives again at Birmingham’s National Exhibition Centre, bringing with it the latest developments and technologies of the industry. This year’s show had a large focus on the sustainability of transit, ranging from packaging to improving emissions.  

In total, the NEC’s Hall 1 was attended by 9759 people – an increase of 30% compared to the previous year and 7% from 2019. It’s so invigorating to see the social flowers bloom once more in what looks to be the wake of Covid-19-related delays and headaches. For the future we can only hope to see these numbers grow and bring with it even more industry game-changers as we work towards a world that has been irrevocably changed. 

A new launch that debuted at Multimodal was the introduction of a staff retention scheme, Generation Logistics, by the logistics industry in response to the woes associated with long-term staff recruitment. This scheme has been coordinated with the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT) and Logistics UK and partnered with the Department for Transport and has received widespread praise and support from businesses of all sizes and specialties. 

By drawing attention to the complex and skill-intensive nature of the trade, President of Logistics UK Phil Roe hopes the campaign will attract and develop a new and diverse pool of talent that will ensure the longevity of the industry and draw attention from any budding new workers who are considering the move into the space. 

“Generation Logistics will provide our industry with the capability to attract and retain the skilled and ambitious workforce which it needs as our role in society continues to flourish,” Roe said. 

“After the recognition of our workforce as key workers during the Covid-19 pandemic, it is critical that we protect and enhance our talent pool to keep our sector developing and thriving to support all sectors of the economy; Generation Logistics will give us the opportunity to do just that, by attracting and retaining the very best talent from across the country.” 

Another exhibitor at the show and winner of the night’s Sustainability Award was Peel Ports, one of the largest port operators in the UK. They received the Multimodal award for sustainability with their efforts to transition most of its straddle carriers and plant equipment from diesel to Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) as part of its ambitious target to become a net zero port operator by 2040.  

They hit their million-litre milestone back in May and are leading their respective industry in this move towards sustainability with assistance from Merseyside associates County Oil Group Ltd, who is supplying the HVO biodiesel at the Port of Liverpool. This milestone comes to a third of their total fuel consumption. 

The Group Head of Supply Chain at Peel Ports Group, James Riddick, had this to say about the achievement: “Over the last 12 months, we have made significant strides to reduce carbon emissions in and around the Port of Liverpool. This has a positive impact for port users and the local community.”
