New research from Everest Group and Lean Solutions Group reveals a significant gap between AI adoption and operational transformation across supply chain-intensive industries.

Published on 26 October 2026, the research has highlighted the challenges businesses face when integrating artificial intelligence (AI) into everyday operations, despite growing investment in the technology.

The study, “Designing the Human + AI Enterprise: A Transformation Agenda for Supply Chain-Intensive Industries”, surveyed more than 200 senior US-focused decision-makers to examine how organisations are adopting AI and adapting their operational processes.

Findings show that 69% of organisations have progressed beyond isolated AI applications. However, only 19% have significantly redesigned workflows to support collaboration between employees and AI systems.

Gaps in operational integration

The research also found that just 26% of organisations have established formal AI accountability structures. This raises questions about governance and responsibility as businesses introduce increasingly sophisticated technologies.

These findings highlight the importance of integrating AI into existing processes rather than focusing solely on technology investment. AI applications can support demand forecasting, inventory management, transport planning and administrative tasks. However, businesses must consider how these systems interact with employees, operational procedures and existing infrastructure.

Without appropriate integration, organisations risk introducing additional complexity without achieving the anticipated improvements in efficiency.

Building long-term value

The findings suggest that businesses must place greater emphasis on workforce development, accountability and operational restructuring to maximise the potential of AI.

For freight forwarders and logistics providers, establishing clear responsibilities and measuring operational performance will be important when evaluating future investment. The research indicates that successful implementation will depend on how effectively businesses adapt their working practices.
